But a truly successful design is more than eye candy. To really “work,” a design needs to resonate with the people it's intended to reach. Which is why ASU's program takes visual communication design (VCD) a step further, adding a strategic component. According to Associate Professor and Department Chair Mookesh Patel, Strategic Visual Communication Design is a holistic approach that takes into account not just the medium and the message that are part of every design concept, but also the value delivered to its audience. So, in addition to their artistic skills, ASU's VCD students develop the tools necessary to conduct in-depth research — to understand the context of the design problem (e.g., political, social, and economic concerns). And their findings inform the entire design process. “When it all comes together,” says Patel, “the result is rewarding for the students, the client, and the audience.” |
